The Caoling Historic Trail cuts across Sandiaojiao, starting at Yuanwangkeng, just inland from Fulung, and ending at Dali on the coast. It is the only remaining section (rebuilt by the Tourism Bureau) of the old Qing dynasty trail that was constructed 130 years ago to provide the only land link down the Northeast Coast from Danshui to Yilan. The present trail is approximately 10 kilometers long and offers a pleasant hike of two to three hours. Two large boulders along the trail bear Qing dynasty inscriptions and are listed as third-class historic sites. One of the inscriptions has four Chinese characters meaning "Bravely Suppress the Wild Mists" and the other bears the single character "Tiger" (the tiger is believed to control the winds). Both were ordered by the regional commander of imperial forces in Taiwan, and were meant to ward off the baleful influences of nature in this once-remote area. |
Guishan Island (Turtle Island)
Photographer: 林明仁
The Guishan Island is 10 kilometers east of Toucheng Town and it is the largest island of Yilan County. Guishan Island is also the only active volcano in Taiwan and is the only island with residents in Yilan. Not only the landmark of Yilan, Guishan Island is also an emblem of Yilan spirit. Guishan Island, a.k.a. Guishan Yu, got its name because its shape resembles a turtle. The island features mountain peaks, sea-eroded caves, a lake, special cliff vegetation, and rich marine ecology resources; it is also a fine place for watching the sun rise and set, and it has become a hot tourist spot in recent years because of the large pods of whales and dolphins that frequently appear in the waters nearby.

Qilan Forest Recreation Area
Photographer: 葉英晉
The Qilan Forest Recreation Area is located about 38 kilometers up the Northern Cross-Island Highway, at the intersection with the highway's Li Mountain (Lishan) Branch. There is a terraced nursery here for cryptomeria trees, a cottage once used by the late President Chang Kai-shek, a forest foot-path, and a little Tarzan forest playground. The gigantic wood area surrounded by primeval forest at the 12-kilometer mark of the Qilan Forestry Road, features 51 huge red cypress and Japan cypress trees thousands of years old. Each of the 51 is named after a famous personage from Chinese history, chosen because its age approximates the time when the historical figure lived. One, for example, is named for Confucius, who lived over 2,000 years ago, and one named after the Tang emperor Tai Zong. This linkage with history makes a visit to the Chinese Historic Men Arboretum educational as well as fun.

Tainan Chikanlou is built by the Dutch in 1652. It was originally called Provintia. In Dutch it means eternity. The Chinese called the building "Chikanlou", "Fanzailou" or "Honmaolou". In 1661, when the Chinese General Cheng Chengkung repelled the Dutch, Provincial was changed to be Chentien governor's mansion. In the early stage of Qing Dynasty when Taijiang River was still running, the tides could reach Chikanlou directly. "The sunset in Chikanlou" was one of the eight famous scenes in Taiwan. Love River Sightseeing Boat
Photographer: 吳永智
Almost all big cities have a beautiful river passed by. This is especially true in Kaohsiung. Love River lies across Kaohsiung for times of sunrises and sunsets. Love River, known as Dagou River in Ching Dynasty, was renamed by Japanese as Takao River. The river was also called Kaohsiung Canal. After restoration of Taiwan, the riverbanks were beautified with greenery works and developed to be park areas, decorated with pillars chained with iron rope. The area becomes a romantic place for lovers to date with each other, therefore, the river was reputed as Love River. The Love River has been a dirty river with odorous smell due to pollution of industrial and house drainage. It was ironically regarded as the ugliest landmark of Kaohsiung. Following years' pollution control, the River rebuilds its beauty, with egrets flying over and fishes playing waves. At night, lights sparkle on Love River. Every day from 4:00-11:00, visitors can take the boats on the east and west coast to look at the romantic and charming sights of Love River. Then, you might like to enjoy drinking coffee at cafes of different moods, such as cafe literary and art squares over River Mambo and olden Love River. It is nice to enjoy the aromatic coffee and listen to the music with different moods and tempos, allowing the leisure of the harbor city to relax your body and soul.

Shakadang Trail
Photographer: 吳永智
The entrance to this trail is conveniently located only a minute or so from the entrance of Tailuge(Taroko) Gorge, behind the Shakadang Toll Station. To reach the trailhead, follow the path behind the toll station that leads down toward Liwu River. After crossing the stream, follow the bank until the river forks at the Shakedang tributary. The trailhead can be found nearby on the right bank of the tributary. Prospectors seeking the gold sand for which the river was known cut this trail during the Japanese occupation. Although the gold has been fully exploited, the sunlight on the clear waters produces a different and perhaps even more beautiful glimmering. After walking for about 25 minutes along the trail, hikers reach a platform. This provides an excellent view of the emerald green waters of Shakadang Stream and the folded strata of marble that form its banks. A wooden walkway leads away from the main Mystery Valley Trail and follows the stream. On weekends, this is a very popular spot, and for those looking to enjoy the tranquility of nature, continuing along the main trail probably offers greater potential.

Lientien Forest& Cultural Area
Photographer: 黃銘仲
In the past, Lintian Mountain Forestry Center, known as "Little Shanghai", was the fourth largest forestry center in Taiwan, the three largest forestry centers being Basian Mountain, Alishan and Taiping Mountain. By 1918, the mountain forest area that the Japanese referred to as "Molisaka" (transliterated as "Senban" in Chinese) was already being used for lumbering. Lintian Mountain's lumber industry continued after Taiwan gained independence from Japan, and came to an end in 1991, when natural logging was no longer permitted. In the past more than ten years, the forest work stations have successively scaled down and merged, and the employee organizations have decreased. The once flourishing Lintian Mountain has gradually declined, and become a tiny, dying mountain village. As one enters today's Lintian Mountain Forestry Center, the few remaining dormitories made of Chinese cypress are vestiges of the past. In the distant history, there remain some scattered, cultural traces that are very moving. Actually, through the joint efforts of the Forestry Bureau and local historians, many cultural resources have been preserved at Lintian Mountain. In addition to a variety of daily living articles, traditional firefighting tools, and lumbering machines and tools, various documents have been preserved, such as faded pictures and books. These are all on display at Lintian Mountain Forestry Culture and History Center, providing a complete testimony of Lintian Mountain's past history.

Sun Moon Lake
Photographer: 陳志明
The Sun Moon Lake, located in Nantou County's Yuchih Township, in the center of Taiwan, is the largest natural lake in Taiwan. It is a beautiful alpine lake, divided by the tiny Lalu Island; the eastern part of the lake is round like the sun and the western side is shaped like a crescent moon, hence the name "Sun Moon Lake". Its beauty is created by the combination of mountain and water scenery, and its 760-meter elevation helps give the impression of a Chinese landscape painting with mist-laden water and clearly defined levels of mountains. The constant changes of mists and moods on the lake make it impossible to comprehend in a single look, and thus, visitors like to linger here. The beauty of the lake, from dawn to dusk and from spring and summer to autumn and winter, exudes an aura of enchantment regardless of whether it is bathed in sunlight or shrouded in mist. In the early morning the surface of the lake is covered by a thin veil of mist. When the sun rises over the mountains the obscuring mist lifts slowly to reveal the lake's true countenance, with its surface reflecting images of mountains and trees as chirping insects and singing birds lend their voices to the enchanted scene. At dusk the colors of the setting sun paint the lake a sparkling gold, transforming it into a crystal fairyland. As the curtain of night falls the lights and reflections ripple with the waves and cooling evening breezes waft in, giving rise to fascinating imaginings of fairy spirits sprinkling fairy dust on the water. The most famous sights around Sun Moon Lake are the Itashao, Lalu Island, the Xuanzang Temple, the Ci-en Pagoda, and the Wenwu Temple and so on. The natural forests bordering these roads are good places for bird watching. There are a lot of birds that live on the mid-elevation, such as the Grey-cheeked Fulvetta, Grap-throated Minivet, Formosan Yuhina, Gray Tree Pie, Bamboo Partridge, Chinese Bulbul, Muller's Barbet, and the Black Bulbul. Colonies of Black-crowned Night herons and Egretta garzettas , and birds such as the common kingfisher and the Green-winged Teal can be seen at the Dazhuhu water reservation, situated around the water gate. Besides these birds, fish, insects and wild vegetables are flourishing in the region as well. These are all natural resources of the Sun Moon Lake region.

Taiwan's mountains are attracting the attention of hikers from all over the world for their height, which rivals the Alps and the Rocky Mountains, and their beautiful alpine scenery. While some of the highest peaks require considerable time and effort to reach, there is one place on the island that gives an instant overview of what Taiwan's mountains have to offer. Mt. Hehuan, despite its altitude of more than 3,000 meters, has a road that goes right across it, making access very convenient. It is the best place to see snow in the tropics, and escape from the summer heat. In as little as one day, you can travel the highest road in East Asia, and take the many hiking paths that lead off the main road. These are usually short and always safe. Mt. Hehuan, Taiwan's "tourist mountain", rivals the island's other high peaks in scenery and atmosphere, yet it is easily reachable by car or on foot. Accommodation is offered at Hohuan Cottage. At the same time, it is the starting point for one of Taiwan's most challenging and exciting treks, Chilai Ridge, a two-day ""ultimate experience"" that involves negotiating a knife-edge ridge with many dizzying pinnacles. Although the road scares away many of the birds and animals for which Taiwan is known, a short walk along the trails leading off the main road, particularly those in the direction of Chilai, will reveal their presence."
